Component: Down Hole Tool
Product: Fill Plug
Case Number: 1053
Problem:
NPT style plugs leaked due to being repeatedly removed and reinstalled. The threads became worn. Chemical sealant was used in an attempt to prevent leaking oil out of the tool.
Use Description
The NPT plug was used in a fill plug application for oil in the down hole tool. The tool is used for drilling short, medium and high angle wells with build rates up to 90 degrees / 100 feet.
Solution
The port configuration was changed to the standard SAE J1926. The -02 socket head Zero-Leak Gold plug was installed.
Results
The ZLGP was used on several different occasions. The ZLGP eliminated the leaks that had been present when using the NPT plugs. Chemical sealant was not necessary. The removal and installation problems were eliminated due to the design of the ZLGP as it relates to the taper in the port.

Component: Fill Valve Body – Submersible Motor
Product: Motor Housing
Case Number: 1054
Problem:
The lead (soft metal) gasket on the motor housing failed and leaked into the motor housing.
Use Description
A lead (soft metal) gasket with a narrow span of torque limits was used in an effort to effect a seal. The seal was either over or under torqued and in both cases a leak resulted inside the motor housing. The leak caused the motor to fail. The result was to replace the motor and endure unwanted down time. Both were significant cost factors.
Solution
The Zero-Leak Gold design was incorporated into the body of the fill valve assembly.
Results
The lead gasket was eliminated. The assembly did not experience the previous leaks. Efficiency and reliability were increased and costs reduced. Motor life was no longer limited by leaking housings.
